Randa Maddah - The Gate Village

Enter the charged and saturated universe of Randa Maddah. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and born in Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, Randa works across painting, film and installation to examine states of suspension conditioned by borders, exile, and return.

Drawing on the visual codes of Middle Eastern miniatures, Randa constructs a symbolic ecology in which myth, spirituality, and lived experience converge. Her recent work engages surrealism, navigating the space between consciousness and dream, returning to fragments of childhood, folklore, and the political tensions embedded in her upbringing. Gardens, groves, mountainous terrains, and cycles of growth form the ground of her compositions, where life is understood through processes of transformation, rupture, and renewal.

Extending the visual language of her Hanging Gardens series into book form, Randa translates the sensorial and symbolic density of her paintings into a more explicitly narrative structure. Working through collage, hand printing, and stitched interventions, her multimedia approach lends the work an expressive, deliberately open quality that carries forward the series’ preoccupation with ecstasy, liberation, and cycles of return.
