Artist's Statement: The History
of the Copper Industry:
The copper industry was restricted in the past to domestic ware,
which was considered necessary for every home in that era. But in
recent years this industry has changed. Our fathers took the principals
and professional secrets from their predecessors and extended the
field of their craftsmanship to elegant ornaments that were works
of art. The copper was henceforth used in interior design embellished
with ornamental tableaus, so the interiors of houses were enriched
with a new glowing and magical beauty that had all the enchantment
of the Orient.
Now we are following in the footsteps of our predecessors and introducing
you to pieces of simple elegance whose artistic perfection expresses
our ancient inheritance.
An overview about the “Oriental
Craft”:
Mr. Abed Al-Azziz Hussein Ezzo and his sons established the Oriental
Craft Company in 1961 in Kalamoon village in the north of Lebanon,and
then Mr. Ghazi Ezzo and his sons took over full ownership of the
company. Thanks to the skills and creativity that are the inspiration
of the company, over the last 40 years it has achieved renown in
the realm of hand-crafted production, and has an output that competes
handsomely with the machine-made product by its perfection and accuracy.
The company has master-minded all categories of interior projects
worldwide.

In French: Dans l’univers du
cuivre des Izzo:
Kalamoun centre artisanal du cuivre, ce métal rouge brun,
malléable et ductile, on y trouve des dizaines d’ateliers
où l’on martèle, grave, soude, décore, façonne,
poinçonne, et modèle ce métal…
L’atelier et la grande salle d’exposition de Mouhannad Izzo sont
plus que centenaires. L’arrière grand père fonda son
atelier au 19ème siècle à Tripoli, le grand-père
et le père sont venus s’installer à Kalamoun après
les inondations causées par le fleuve Abou Ali dans les années
50.
Mouhannad qui est toute activité et plein d’énergie
assure la continuité de ce métier familial. Sont exécutés
: vases, plateaux, bassins, calices, coupes, ciboires, bassines,
cafetières, cruches, versets coraniques, articles pour églises
et mosquées…
Les œuvres des Izzo se trouvent partout au Liban et dans le monde:
Hôtels, restaurants, palaces, maisons, mosquées, églises…
Mouhannad a participé à plusieurs expositions au Liban,
les émirats et les pays du moyen Orient.
En rentrant dans les salles d’expositions on voit des milliers de
pièces de tout genre, on entend aussi le bruit de martelage,
venant des ateliers… il suffit de passer le seuil d’une porte pour
se trouver dans un autre monde, un atelier plein de vie où
l’on voit comment une plaque de cuivre se transforme en une forme,
un objet qui a des fins utiles et décoratives, et l’on observe
toutes les étapes par où passe le cuivre et toutes
ses transformations et les petits secrets des maîtres artisans.
Les collectionneurs, et la clientèle sensible à ces
produits des arts mineurs sont nombreux qui cherchent à décorer
leurs intérieurs par des pièces à l’ancienne
qui s’adaptent bien avec les tapis et les coins de salon à
l’oriental.
C’est vrai, le marteleur n’est pas un artiste créateur c’est
un artisan qui sait d’avance ce qu’il fait et où il aboutira
avec son travail. Il se trouve que des artisans aient du goût
et d’habileté un sens du nouveau, de l’inédit, de
la création.
