Curriculum Vitae: Jamal Choucair, sculptor:
Self-taught, simple, naive and utterly sincere, he was born in 1959
in the region of Byblos, which is rich in ancient remains and in
history and was the cradle of civilization and of the alphabet.
Ever since his earliest days he has been drawn by the antiquities
that are to be seen almost everywhere.
The citadel and the port and of course the ancient bazaars and shops
had on display both on the ground and in the windows carvings, vases
and suchlike objects which became a passion for the teenage Jamal.
He began outlining and sketching and following closely what was
going on in the excavations and the researches being made in the
district.
Jamal took up carving in stone in order to imitate the ancient works
of art, while at the same time looking for a new and more contemporary
expression.
He worked with an architect sculptor under whose influence he came.
He carved several works and executed decorative bas-reliefs, with
vases, eagles, busts of various people and such-like objects.
The stone he uses is local, to be found around him any day. He has
executed works that are to be found here and there, in institutions,
schools, centers, clubs, and the homes of collectors.

en 1959 dans la région de Byblos riche en vestiges, en histoire,
berceau de la civilisation et de l'alphabet.
Depuis son plus jeune âge il a été attiré
par ses antiquités qu'on voit un peu partout.
La citadelle et le port bien sûr les vieux souks et les magasins
où sont rangés à terre et dans les vitrines
des sculptures, des vases, des objets divers qui passionnaient l'adolescent
Jamal.
Il débuta à gribouiller, à dessiner et à
poursuivre de près les travaux dans les recherches et excavations
etc…
Il s'est mis à sculpter la pierre imitant les œuvres antiques
cherchant une expression nouvelle et plus contemporaine.
Il travailla avec un architecte sculpteur qui l'a influencé.
Il sculpta plusieurs pièces et réalisa des bas reliefs
décoratifs: des vases, des aigles, des bustes, des personnages,
et des sujets divers…
La pierre utilisée est locale qu'il trouve dans sont entourage
de tous les jours.
Il a des œuvres qui se trouvent un peu partout, chez des collectionneurs,
des institutions, des écoles, des centres, des clubs etc…
