Amin Sfeir

Biography and Statement:

Amin Sfeir was born in the village of Reyfoun in the Kesrouan. His early student life was spent at the College Saint Joseph in Antoura.

Between 1951 and 1953, he studied at ALBA, thereafter travelling to Paris where he attended both the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. From 1955 onwards, Sfeir spent ten years travelling between Paris and Beirut.

In 1966, he decided to settle down in Lebanon, occasionally visiting Europe and America. Sfeir's exhibitions between 1968 and 1971 were exclusively devoted to the theme of childhood.

He participated in many group shows including the Biennales of Paris (1964) and Alexandria and a collective show at the United Nations in New York (1974).

Sfeir has held more than nine one-man shows in Lebanon between 1961 and 1979.

He has been the president of the Municipality of Rayfoun since 1965. He greatly improved his village with the planting of gardens and was responsible for renovating its buildings, thus making it a model village in the Lebanese mountains.

He was awarded the Said Akl Prize in 1964.

The Artist has passed away in 2002.
