A Druse Layman

This Druze, initiated as he is into the mysteries of his secret religion, has still the right to wear an embroidered abayé (robe), smoke a chibouq, and carry weapons. The last, with men, like jewellery among the women, are a necessary part of the costume (Early 19th Century).

Going to the fountain

In a blouse and a full striped skirt, this Druze peasant girl has thrown a kerchief over her head and carries on her shoulder a jar full of water from the fountain (Late 19th Century).

The Thirsty fisherman

The fisherman’s long-sleeved waistcoat is caught at the waist by a belt. The shirwal is knee length, the turban is smallish, and the sleeves are rolled for convenience in work. He has raised the gargoulette to direct its stream into his thirsty throat (Middle 19th Century).

End of a day

At the end of his day – and nearly of his life – this peasant, dressed in a short abayé and a white shirwal, sits in eastern fashion. He holds his walking stick and passes the time by fingering his beads (Late 19th Century).
